mikeslr .- That’s the way we work !!

In my previous life (pre-retirement), after majoring in American History as an undergrad, I was an Appellate Attorney often working on cases involving Constitutional Law. So I appreciate the Legal Concept “All men are created equal” the Founders expressed in the Declaration of Independence and sought to implement (as much as they considered practical) in the Constitution. It was a good “catch phrase” and perhaps the best they could then manage in rejecting the then prevailing notion of Feudalism: Some people are born more worthy, and more entitled, than others.

Instinctively, we know that neither concept is correct. For incalculable generations we survived as hunter-gatherers. We hunted in packs, as a group, depending on each other, taking advantage of whatever helpful ability any member brought to the hunt.

Left to our own devices –free of economic necessities– we still enjoy being a part of something larger than oneself. America’s favorite sports –the ones we played as kids and vicariously take part in as fans– are baseball and football. The best hitter doesn’t have to have the speed of shortstop. A linebacker doesn’t have to have the hand-eye co-ordination of a quarterback.

There’s an Islamic adage worth considering: “God made us different in order that we could work together”.
